Breaking News:Court Orders Department of State Services (DSS) to Either Release Emefiele or Bring Charges Against Him within One Week

The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has given an order to the Department of State Services (DSS) regarding Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). According to NAIJALINKNEWS, the judge has instructed the DSS to either bring criminal charges against Emefiele and take him to court or release him from custody. The judge, Justice Hamza Muazu, has given the DSS one week to comply with this directive. The court's decision came after an application made by Emefiele's lawyer, Joseph Daudu, who also demanded a compensation of N5M for the alleged unlawful detention.

Justice Muazu acknowledged that the DSS has the authority to make arrests, detain individuals, and prevent internal crimes. However, the judge emphasized that these actions must be carried out in accordance with the law. He specified that the arrest power of the DSS is not without limits and that there are specific conditions that must be met for a Nigerian citizen to be lawfully held and for a specific duration.

Since his arrest on June 9, Emefiele has remained in detention following the suspension by President Bola Tinubu, who also initiated an investigation into the activities of the CBN. President Tinubu instructed Emefiele to transfer his responsibilities to Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, the deputy governor of the operations directorate.
